Some people are celebrating Easter today. Some of us are celebrating *not* celebrating Easter. 😀 We decided to create a new cocktail with that in mind. We wanted something that spoke to being carefree and happy, so we went with a tiki style drink. There aren’t a whole lot of bourbon-based tiki drinks out there, so we decided to start with that as a base. We also have a lovely coconut puree from Perfect Purees that we are always looking for a good excuse to use. All of the purees we’ve tried from them are brilliant, so we highly recommend them if you want access to excellent tropical ingredients year round. We can’t recommend them enough. Tangerines are in season right now, and we love tangerines in drinks, so we decided to add them to the party as well. They add a nice sweetness, but they also add more acidity compared to oranges. So they bring a lot more to the party. Without further ado, we give you the Apostate.
- 1 1/2 oz bourbon
- 3/4 oz white rum
- 1 oz tangerine juice
- 1/2 oz lime juice
- 1 oz coconut puree
- 1 tsp absinthe
- 3 sprigs mint
Muddle mint in shaker. Add other ingredients. Shake with ice. Give it a good hard shake to help emulsify the coconut. Strain into a glass (might want to double strain if you don’t want bits of mint). Garnish with 3 cherries and a sprig of mint.
- Nose: Coconut, mint, little bit of lime, little bit of funk from the rum, vanilla and barrel notes from the bourbon.
- Palate: Coconut and mint at the front, followed by a little bit of the rum funkiness and some vegetal dryness from the mint. Bourbon and lime speak up on the mid-palate, bringing some notes reminiscent of a Derby. Then there’s a last burst of creamy sweetness from the coconut and the vanilla notes of the bourbon leading into a surprisingly dry finish.
We think this is just the thing for relaxing in the sunshine, or maybe to provide refreshment while watching a few old episodes of Cosmos 🙂 Whatever your persuasion, we hope you’ve had a lovely weekend and can take a moment out of your busy schedule to enjoy a cocktail.
